Our guest artists will be Eric James Brown and
Laura Shulse both of Hannibal.
Eric James Brown works primarily in
pencil or graphite because he enjoys the detailing abilities and the
range of shading it offers. He never uses a straight edge. He thinks
it gives the work a softer quality and since he enjoys rural scenes,
this works well as there are few straight lines in the settling
contours of old structures. Also pencil is quick in regards to
set-up and take-down.
Eric has been drawing since he was five. He
was born in Santa Monica and took a variety of classes in
drawing. He presently lives in Hannibal with wife, Peggy and
children.
Laura Shulse
Laura's watercolors cover a variety of subject matter
ranging from landscapes, religious and inspirational
themes, family, favorite celebrities, and things that she
simply feels inclined to paint. "I would not say that I can
classify my paintings as leaning to one particular style, but rather
they reflect my interests and things that are important to me," said
Shulse. When not painting or working at her job as a shift
leader at Hardee's Laura enjoys reading, photography,
listening to music, arts and crafts, writing poetry and is active in
her church, Fifth Street Baptist.

I've lived in Hannibal all my
life. I attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ilinois
and Missouri University Columbia, where I majored in art. I
later took education classes and taught English and art at the
junior high/middle school. Most of my college art classes were oil
painting. Since then I took some watercolor workshops with
Duane Light, and now I'm taking watercolor classes with Brenda
Fisher. The paintings here at the gallery are watercolors and
from the present time. I enjoy working with drawing, and
learning techniques in watercolor.
Dottie Hahn
My years of
teaching have forced me to become familiar with a variety of
media. As a result, I
have found myself combining media and processes such as batik wax
with watercolor,
printmaking processes with fibers, and fibers with
watercolor, to name a few. The spontaneity of watercolor is what I
love most. Although I
paint realistic works, I find adventure in working abstractly. In my 3D watercolors I enjoy
layering textures and discovering patterns that have been created by
the application of paint. I then begin to create
cavities within the layers by cutting away the pattern to
reveal a new
texture, a color, or a
shape below that layer.
In each piece I try to create the essence of a mood, a rhythm
in nature, or the remnants of a fractal design. I am always trying to
achieve not only visual
depth, but also an actual depth. My goal is to make the viewer look
beyond the surface.

If art has meaning, then my art is the
fingerprint of my soul.
No one is exempt from the problems of everyday
life. Since the dawn of creation mankind has searched for answers to
life's challenges, while artisans from various persuasions have
produced icons and images as expressions of Divine hope.
As I've spent time behind the viewfinder of my
camera seeing what lay before me, I've realized that there is more
to a photograph than a mere image - there's a story waiting to
be told. Therefore, my aim is to listen to the voice of the Creator
and capture His creation in order to encourage, convict, inspire,
and affect others through our current body of work titled
Distinctions.
Although my involvement and awards in photography
go back over 25 years, it has been in the last decade that my art
has given voice to the rhythms of my soul. We hope you find the
images pleasing and the words encouraging.
My wife Kathleen and I are lifetime residents of
the St. Louis area. We currently reside in St. Charles, MO. We have
one daughter, Lauren, who is currently a senior at Lindenwood
University.

elementary school and Jr. High School classes in Massachusetts.
Basically, I am self taught. My art
includes wood carving, works in pencil, pen & ink, oils, water
color, photography, simulated paintings (starting with digital
photos) and photo restorations. I am
